Cupping Therapy Q&A

What is cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine that eases musculoskeletal pain and promotes the healing of injuries. The musculoskeletal system includes your muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, and bones.

During cupping therapy, Dr. Park uses heated or silicone cups. When placed on your skin, the cups create a vacuum that pulls the skin, causing it to redden and the blood vessels to expand.

Cupping is dry or wet. Dry cupping involves the single cupping of the skin to increase circulation to the area. With wet cupping, your provider removes the cup after the initial session, makes tiny cuts in the skin, and does another cupping therapy session to draw out the blood.

Dr. Park may place the cups on your back, abdomen, chest, buttocks, or legs.

Am I a candidate for cupping therapy?

Dr. Park takes a holistic approach to care and conducts a thorough physical exam to determine the right treatment for you. He may consider you a candidate for cupping therapy if you have musculoskeletal pain or an injury, such as:

  • Sprains or strains
  • Neck and back pain
  • Inflammation
  • Headaches
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Myofascial pain

Dr. Park may also consider you a candidate for cupping therapy if you’re searching for a safe and effective treatment to improve your overall sense of well-being. Cupping therapy feels like a massage, and many people find the alternative therapy relaxing.

What happens during cupping therapy?

Dr. Park customizes your cupping therapy treatment plan to match your needs. He reviews the plan with you before you start therapy, so you know what to expect.

While you relax on the exam table, Dr. Park places the cups on the injured or painful area of the body. He leaves the cups in place for a set period of time, usually no more than 10 minutes.

At your first cupping therapy session, Dr. Park may use three to five cups. During follow-up treatments, he may place five to seven cups.

After your therapy, you can expect a bright red circle on your skin where Dr. Park placed the cup. Dr. Park provides specific instructions on how to care for your cupping marks, which usually disappear within 10 days.

Though results vary, you may feel an immediate improvement in pain following your session.

Dr. Park may also recommend combining cupping therapy with acupuncture for even better results.
